HCC Prof To Discuss Civil War Mascots
10/24, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Events Center, Beacon Hall
Open to Public at No Charge
BRIDGEPORT - Housatonic Community College History
Professor David Koch October 24 will examine an oft-ignored lighthearted
side of the Civil War: animal mascots.
“Surprisingly, many units brought animals with them into the field,” Koch
said, “some, like Old Abe, the bald eagle of the 8th Wisconsin Regiment,
had a perch, so he could be on the front line during battle.”
Koch will discuss how animals have been used throughout history to
represent nations, families, and military units. He will show
a more human side of a war that is often most examined only in terms
of casualties, political acts, weaponry, and logistics.
Koch, who has lectured on historical topics at libraries and other
venues through the state, will give two talks: one at 1 p.m. in the
Events Center in Beacon Hall and another at 7 p.m. in the same location.
Both events are open to the public at no charge.
