U Thant’s Daughter To Speak at HCC Carries on Father’s Work
Thursday, Oct. 13, 11 a.m. Open to Public at No Charge
BRIDGEPORT – Aye Aye Thant, daughter of former
U.N. Secretary General U Thant, will speak Oct. 13
at Housatonic Community College.
Thant, who
founded the U. Thant Institute to carry on her father’s work, will talk
about student activism and what students can do on a practical level to help
bring about world peace. She will discuss how an education can help students
further these efforts through involvement in careers such as diplomacy, journalism,
and working for Non-Government Organizations (NGOs).
U Thant, a native of Burma (now Myanmar) served as the third U.N. Secretary General, succeeding Dag Hammarskjold who was killed in a plane crash. Thant held the position from 1961 to 1971. During his tenure, he was credited with helping to defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis and helping to end the Civil War in the Congo.
On many occasions, U Thant referred to the U.N. Charter, which stressed the need for people “to practice tolerance and live together in peace as good neighbors.” The U Thant Institute was founded to promote his values, ideals and vision of a peaceful world that is safe for diversity and where people can live in peaceful coexistence.
Aye Aye Thant’s talk will begin at 11 a.m. in the Events Center in Beacon Hall on the southern perimeter of the HCC campus. It is open to the public at no charge.
