CONN. BLACK SOLDIERS IN CIVIL WAR SUBJECT OF HCC TALK
Prof. David Koch To Speak
Feb. 28, 2 p.m., Events Center, Beacon Hall
BRIDGEPORT – Connecticut’s Black Civil
War soldiers will be the subject of a talk Mon., Feb. 28 by HCC
Prof. David Koch.
The story of the soldiers is a compelling one, Koch said. “It highlights the best and the worst of a country’s history: a union cause that was pro-abolition but anti-equality for African Americans; dogged determination of men in a state already free fighting for less pay and much less payoff than white soldiers; and persistence in the face of savage reprisal if caught by Confederate soldiers in battle or out of it.”
Prof. Koch
is a sought-after speaker who has given numerous lectures at public
libraries across the state. He has worked for national historical and
natural sites, promoting the nation’s physical and historical heritage.
Prof. Koch has also lectured for organizations across the country
and in Europe on such topics as Civil War battles, politics in the
Civil War, medicine in the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln’s life
and political activities, and slavery and the American Experience.
He has given specialized presentations on the Gettysburg National Cemetery,
the Battle of Gettysburg, and Connecticut in the Civil War.
The talk, which is open to the public at no charge, will be held at
2 p.m. in the Events Center in Beacon Hall. It is being hosted by HCC’s
Behavioral & Social Sciences Department, Black Student Union, and
Black History Month Committee.
