HCC Faculty/students To Square Off
In Table Tennis Tourney 10/29
Monroe Prof. Coaches Student Team
BRIDGEPORT – Sports will return to Housatonic Community College
Friday, October 29, when Housatonic Community College’s new Table
Tennis Team squares off against faculty members. The event marks another
Housatonic return to the table where it once earned accolades: In 1973,
the college won the Connecticut Table Tennis Association’s state
championship. The college’s nascent table tennis team was founded
by Art Prof. Andy Pinto of Monroe, a member of that
championship team as an HCC student, and a group of interested HCC
students. The students formed a table tennis club, which now boasts
27 members, from which a seven-member team is drawn. “Several
students who were interested in forming a club heard that I thought
we should have one and sought me out,” Pinto said. “The
club and the team were the outgrowth of this.” During a previous
faculty/staff tournament, which the student team won, staffers from
the Student Activities Area acted as cheerleaders, complete with pom-poms.
Pinto, who serves as club advisor and team coach, hopes to see the
formation of a table tennis league in Southern Connecticut. The tournament
will take place at 1 p.m. in the 3rd Floor recreation room in Beacon
Hall.
