HCC/Albertus Sign Transfer Pact
For Accelerated Business Management Program
Strengthens
Ties between Schools
BRIDGEPORT--Housatonic
Community College (HCC) and New Haven’s Albertus Magnus College
(AMC) signed a transfer agreement Sept. 8 that will guarantee qualified
HCC graduates admission into AMC’s accelerated Bachelor of Science
in Business Management program.
The agreement, which takes effect in the Spring, 2011 semester, applies
to graduates of HCC’s seven business administration programs
who earned a minimum GPA of 2.0 or better and have two years work experience.
The Albertus program is offered through the School of New Dimensions.
“The agreement with Albertus Magnus presents a wonderful opportunity
for our students,” said HCC President Anita Gliniecki of Monroe. “It
builds on a history of cooperation with Albertus that will enable more of our
students to move seamlessly to the next level of their academic careers.”
The transfer agreement stands as an excellent example of how a community
college and a four-year college can work together to provide educational
opportunities for students, she said.
“We at Albertus Magnus College are extremely pleased to begin this new
and exciting relationship with Housatonic Community College,” said Albertus
President Dr. Julia McNamara of Old Saybrook. “It is a wonderful opportunity
for our institutions to work together to make the dream of attaining a bachelor's
degree a reality for Housatonic students who are so focused on creating a better
future for themselves and their families."
HCC Academic Dean Elizabeth Roop of Stratford observed that the transfer
agreement is part of a growing national trend. “More and more,
students enrolling at community colleges are recognizing the benefit
of community colleges as transfer institutions. Four-year colleges
and universities are also increasingly recognizing community college
graduates as a source of qualified students who can successfully complete
a four-year program. And we all know that community colleges are a
central force in increasing the number of students graduating at all
levels of higher education, whether from their own colleges or in contributing
to the number of bachelor’s degree-ready students in the transfer
pipeline.”
Students and parents alike realize that this makes economic sense as
well as academic sense, she said. By going to a community college for
two years, then transferring to a four-year school, she said, students
can cut their tuition bill almost in half.
"The agreement between Albertus and Housatonic is a great example of how
creative people can work together to further one of the most significant issues
in higher education today: providing access to high quality academic programs
for students enmeshed in family, career and professional obligations,” said
Albertus Provost Dr. John Donohue of Hamden. “We're delighted to partner
with HCC.”
This is the third transfer agreement Housatonic and Albertus have signed.
The others apply to traditional programs in General Studies and Human
Services.
The transfer agreement applies to HCC students who receive degrees
in Business Administration; Business Administration: Human Resource
Management; Business Administration: Management; Business Administration:
Finance; Business Administration: Small Business Management, Business
Administration: Global Business Option; and Business Administration:
Customer Service/Marketing programs.
Qualified graduates of these HCC programs can take advantage of the
transfer agreement. Qualified HCC students now enrolled in these programs
can take advantage of the transfer agreement upon graduation.
AMC’s accelerated programs were designed for working professionals
interested in completing their undergraduate degree or pursuing a master’s
degree. Students benefit from small class sizes and classroom
activities are offered in convenient locations and at convenient times.
HCC has transfer agreements in place with 18 four-year colleges and
universities. These include Albertus Magnus, Bridgeport Hospital School
of Nursing, Central Connecticut State University, Western Connecticut
State University, Southern Connecticut State University, Eastern Connecticut
State University, Charter Oak College, Fairfield University, Marymount
College, New York University, Quinnipiac University, Sacred Heart University,
St. Joseph College, Post University, University of Bridgeport, University
of Connecticut, University of New Haven and Wheelock College.
