In the company of … features
Warhol photos and work by Jeremy Kost, Rashaad Newsome, and Billy
Sullivan.
Bridgeport, CT--In the company of … opens on
September 9 through Oct. 15 at the Burt Chernow Gallery at Housatonic
Community College. The exhibit will feature videos, photographs,
paintings and drawings by contemporary artists Jeremy Kost, Rashaad
Newsome and Billy Sullivan who have been inspired by Warhol’s
early career that included the living theater of his studio, “The
Factory,” as well as his later career that relied on portraits
of collectors, celebrities and socialites.
The exhibition is curated by Terri C. Smith. The opening reception
is September 9 from 5-7 p.m. at the Burt Chernow Gallery. It
is free and open to the public. A related performance by Trisha Baga
titled Madonna y el Niño takes place on October 14
at 4:00 p.m. in the Chernow Gallery.
The Housatonic Museum of Art recently received a gift of 158 Warhol
Polaroids and black-and-white photographs from The Andy Warhol Foundation
for the Visual Arts through the Warhol Photographic Legacy Project.
More than seventy of these photos will be included in this exhibit.
In the company of … pairs Warhol's Polaroids, black-and-white
photos, screen tests including footage of musician Lou Reed and artist Marcel
Duchamp, and an episode of Andy Warhol’s TV (featuring an interview
with John Waters and Divine) with works by artists working today. Billy
Sullivan, a Warhol contemporary, will exhibit his ink drawing, paintings and
photos in a salon-style installation. Sullivan portrays artists,
models, collectors, curators, and others who move in his social circle – including
a 1971 photograph of Andy Warhol holding a camera.
Rashaad Newsome’s video Shade Compositions (Screen Test 2) documents
African American women acting out “sassy vocalizations.”
Jeremy Kost is aligned with Warhol through his use of the Polaroid
and affinity for photographing celebrities and underground personalities.
Kost will exhibit Polaroids from nightclubs and large color prints
of celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Beyonce and Madonna.
The exhibit will feature a performance by Trisha Baga on October 14
at 4:00 pm in the Burt Chernow gallery. Baga will perform Madonna
y El Niño. Madonna and Warhol crossed paths and their
social circles overlapped. Baga’s multi-media performance
includes manipulated videos of Madonna in concert, projected computer
screens, and Baga’s live interaction with the media.
