NEW PROGRAMS TO BE OFFERED NEXT SEMESTER AT HCC
BRIDGEPORT -- New degree and certificate choices
will be available to new and continuing students next semester at
Housatonic Community College.
Students
will be able to enroll in a Pathway to Teaching Careers associate degree program
as well as in Accounting for Small Business degree and certificate programs.
In addition, a Psychology Transfer Concentration is available to students enrolled
in the Liberal Arts & Sciences: Humanities/Behavioral & Social Sciences
Concentration. Also, Guaranteed Admission Program with the University of Connecticut
has been expanded to include the School of Business.
The Pathway to Teaching Careers program offers students a strong foundation
in both the liberal arts and in their chosen field of specialization.
Students will be prepared to transfer to the teacher preparation program
at Southern Connecticut State University where they can pursue a bachelor’s
degree with secondary education certification in their area of specialization.
Areas of specialization include Biology, Chemistry, English, Foreign
Language, Mathematics and Physics. These have been identified by the
State Department of Education as having current and projected teacher
shortages.
The growth of small business has been heralded as a key to ending the
current recession. The Accounting for Small Business associate degree
program is designed to prepare students for small-business careers
as a full-charge bookkeeper or accounting assistant, and to prepare
them to move up the career ladder.
The basic mechanics of bookkeeping and accounting theory are complemented
by extensive study of computers and computer applications relative
to the bookkeeping and accounting process.
The Accounting for Small Business certificate program covers bookkeeping
principles and procedures as they relate to the accounting system of
a small business. It focuses on the recording process, general and
subsidiary ledger and financial statements, the preparation of bank
reconciliations, payroll and payroll tax filings.
The Psychology Transfer Concentration provides a recommended sequence
for students wanting to transfer to a bachelor’s degree program
in Psychology. The program parallels the core requirements for the
first two years of most four-year colleges.
Under the UCONN GAP program, students wanting to pursue a bachelor's
degree in liberal arts and sciences <http://www.clas.uconn.edu/> , agriculture
and natural resources <http://www.myagnr.uconn.edu/index.php> or business <http://www.business.uconn.edu/cms> are
guaranteed admission to UCONN once they have received their associate
degree, completed appropriate courses, and have met the minimum
grades and requirements for the selected program. More information
about the GAP program can be found at http://transfer.uconn.edu/index_gap.html.
The new academic programs join a roster of popular programs that include
Criminal Justice. This associate degree program is designed to provide
students with the professional knowledge, skills, and techniques required
in the criminal justice field. Students may specialize in the following
options: law enforcement, administration, corrections, investigation,
and security and loss prevention.
Criminal
Justice certificate programs are offered in the area of corrections, criminal
