HCC Offers Cutting-Edge Physical Science Course
Features Virtual Online Lab
Only Community College To Offer It
Runs June 1-July 23
BRIDGEPORT – Housatonic Community College this summer is offering
a unique physical science course that offers both online lectures and
labs.
“The lab incorporates everything you do in a hands on lab, but you do
it virtually,” said Chemistry Professor Joan Lloyd, who developed and
is teaching the course. “It offers virtual assignments, movies, and interactive
game-like study tools.”
Most online science courses are hybrids that require students to attend
a lab at a college’s main or satellite campus.
The course, which is being piloted this semester, is the second of
its kind in the state and the only one offered in the Connecticut Community
College systems. Three years in the making, it introduces the
methods of science in the areas of chemistry, earth science, and astronomy
It covers fundamental principles governing chemistry including chemical
elements, bonding, chemical reactions, and radioactivity. In addition,
it covers the basic science principles of the Earth’s interior,
plate tectonics, the driving forces of weather, the solar system, stars,
and galaxies.
The course runs June 1 – July 23. For more information, contact
Joan Lloyd at 203-332-5211.
