DARWIN SUBJECT OF HCC TALK
HCC PROFESSOR TO SPEAK
April 8 at 3 and 7 p.m.
BRIDGEPORT – Darwinism:
History and Hysteria will
be the subject of a talk April 8 at Housatonic Community College.
The talk, part
of HCC’s Contemporary Issues series, will center on the historical
significance of Charles Darwin and the intense controversy that surrounds
his theory of evolution, from its first publication 150 years ago to
the current, often acrimonious debate on evolution and creationism
in the United States.
The speaker
will be HCC professor David Koch, who regularly speaks on historical
topics at public libraries in the area.
“Charles Darwin’s
proposal of natural selection as the engine for the system of biological development
has spurred furious debate in Europe and the United States.,” Koch remarked. “His
work has become a lightening rod for the intense conflict between faith
and reason that has taken place for centuries in western societies.”
“Darwin’s
own private agony over the spiritual implications of his work and the questioning
of his own faith make his scientific work all the more poignant,” Koch
added.
Koch has worked for national historical and natural sites, promoting
the nation’s physical and historical heritage. He has also lectured
for organizations across the country and in Europe on such topics as
Civil War battles, politics in the Civil War, medicine in the Civil
War, Abraham Lincoln’s life and political activities, and slavery
and the American Experience.
Koch’s talks, which are free and open to the public, will take
place at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Events Center in Beacon Hall. HCC
is located at 900 Lafayette Blvd. in downtown Bridgeport, less than
150 yards of I-95 (Exit 27) and Rte. 8 (Exit 1), a block from the Arena
at Harbor Yard.
Free parking is available in the Housatonic Community College garage.
