NOTED AUTHOR TO SPEAK

BRIDGEPORT -- Jennifer Baszile, author of the book The
Black Girl Next Door, will speak at Housatonic Community College Tuesday,
Oct. 27.
The author, who was the first black female professor to join Yale University's
history department and has been named one of the "Thirty Leaders of the
Future" by Ebony magazine, will explore how incidents of racial
and cultural intolerance are both perceived and internalized by its targets.
Further, she will discuss how those challenging experiences can be used to positively
fortify and shape individual character, as well as create opportunities for leadership.
Baszile’s presentation draws on The Black Girl Next Door, and
her experiences as the first African American woman to teach history at Yale
University.
The book, which has been called a “powerful, beautifully written
memoir,” addresses the coming of age of a black girl in an exclusive white
suburb in "integrated," post-Civil Rights California in the 1970s and
1980s.
A deeply personal view of a significant period of American social history, The
Black Girl Next Door deftly balances childhood experiences with adult observations,
creating an illuminating and poignant look at a unique time in our country's
history.
The event, which begins at 3:15 p.m. in the Events Center in the college’s
new Beacon Hall, is free and open to the public.
