HCC CONTEMPORARY ISSUES PROGRAM TO PROBE
GENDER DIFFERENCES IN LEARNING MATH
BRIDGEPORT – Housatonic Community
College will kick off its 2009-2010 Contemporary Issues Program Tuesday, Sept.
29 with a presentation on Gender
Differences in Learning Math.
HCC
professor Elizabeth Raver will address the question, “Are men better able
to learn math than women?” Her answer is a resounding “No!” and
she’ll explain why.
Her
talk will touch on each gender’s learning styles and what can
be done in classroom situations to ensure that neither group is shortchanged
in the educational process.
The event, sponsored by the college’s Diversity Awareness Committee,
is the first in a series of talks on contemporary issues related to
diversity. At least twice a year, faculty and/or staff members will
make a presentation on a topic that falls within their areas of expertise.
“To further its goal of promoting diversity awareness on campus,
the committee voted to sponsor a lecture series featuring experts on diversity
related subjects.” said Committee Chairman Anson C. Smith. “We realized
from the outset that we could look to our own ranks: Our faculty and staff have
their own areas of expertise – many have written theses or conducted research
in them – and many have been called upon by the print and electronic
media for expert commentary.”
Raver will make two presentations: one at 3 p.m. and another at 7 p.m. Both,
which will be held in the Event Center in Beacon Hall, are free and open to the
public.
HCC is located at 900 Lafayette Blvd. in downtown Bridgeport, less than 150 yards
off I-95 (Exit 27) and Rte. 8 (Exit 1), a block from the Arena at Harbor Yard.
