AEOLIAN BIKE RIDE SLATED FOR BRIDGEPORT 5/30
52 CYCLISTS SOUGHT
PART OF SWEETPORT FESTIVAL
NO ENTRY FEE
BRIDGEPORT – The unique Aeolian Bike Ride, which has
already been to New York, San Francisco, Canada, South Africa, Australia
and Italy, is coming to Bridgeport Saturday, May 30.
The
ride, sponsored by The Housatonic Community College Museum of Art in conjunction
with the Sweetport Music and Art Festival, will field 52 bicyclists wearing
handmade, rip-stop nylon costumes that they borrow for the ride across the
city. The easy bike ride will inflate that attire into a bunny, bubble
or drop shape.
“The
Aeolian Bike Ride is a fun event which is really a form of public art,” said
Housatonic Museum of Art Director Robbin Zella, “and we are sponsoring
it in conjunction with Sweetport. The goal of the ride is to excite,
delight and involve the rider and the passerby. The idea is to create a fun,
public participatory art event that transforms both the bicyclists and the
landscape into a work of art.”
“We
need at least 52 volunteers to enter the race,” Zella said. “People
interested in participating or serving as volunteers should go to http://www.uji-making.com/lists/?p=subscribe&id=1.
The
bike ride, which should take 60-90 minutes, will begin at People’s United
Bank Plaza, 850 Main St. in downtown Bridgeport. Participants, who must be
at least 4 feet tall, should bring a helmet and a bicycle to the event.
Inflatable
costumes will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. However,
riders without costumes are welcome to register and participate.
The
Housatonic Museum of Art is located on the campus of Housatonic Community
College at 900 Lafayette Blvd. in downtown Bridgeport, less than 150 yards
off I-95 (Exit 27) and Rte. 8 (Exit 1), a block from the Arena at Harbor Yard.
