PROPERTY MANAGEMENT COURSE AT HCC
For residents of affordable/supportive housing
Starts June 1
BRIDGEPORT -- Housatonic Community College in June will offer
a free Introduction to Property Management course.
The
course, which introduces students to entry level jobs in areas such as desk
clerk, offers interested students the first formal training that combined education
and field-training opportunities to be successful in these areas. It is targeted
to residents of affordable and supportive housing, which often offers these
types of positions to residents.
“This
course can be your first step to learn about different entry-level career positions
in the affordable and supportive housing sector,” said Director of Continuing
Education Debbie Kuchmas. “This course will introduce students
to college education and will equip them with skills to obtain entry
level employment.”
“The course, which is free and open to the first 20 students who qualify,
provides a general introduction to the field, including an overview of the
different types of multi-family affordable and supportive housing,” Kuchmas
said. “At the same time, it provides students with an introduction
to college study.”
The
property management course will cover the major functions of property
management, including specific responsibilities, usual practices, legal functions
and issues, and confidentiality and other ethical concerns, she said. It will
cover the demographics of different population groups living in subsidized
housing, and the role of support service personnel in aiding at-risk tenants.
It also explores the different housing programs that pay for construction,
rehabilitation and operating subsidies at the local, state and federal
levels. The course was developed with the input of an advisory board
made up of representatives from education, social service agencies,
and the supportive and affordable housing industry.
The course will meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, June 1-June 19,
from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room 134 in Beacon Hall. Free lunch will be
provided after every class.
An informational open house will be held Tuesday, May 12, 10 a.m. – noon
in Room 135, Beacon Hall.
