HCC TO OBSERVE "EARTHWEEKS 2009"
BRIDGEPORT - A used blue-jeans drive, movies, teach-ins, poetry readings, forums, "hands-on" community service projects and a "green fair" are on the HCC agenda through April 30 as the college observes Earthweeks 2009.
Sponsored
by the Friends of the Environment Club, the events, which are free and open to
the public, include:
- Blue Jeans Drive through April 13. Old blue jeans will be collected to be recycled into home insulation. They can be dropped off in the student activities area and cafeteria in Beacon Hall and in the cafeteria and Broad Street entrance to Lafayette Hall.
- Movie: Car of the Future, Tuesday, & Wednesday, April 14 and 15. This Nova broadcast deals with that distinctly American obsession, the car: Where do you turn in today's car market? Is new technology about to transform the way we drive? Join Tom Magliozzi and his brother Ray- better known as Click and Clack, the Tappet brothers- as they take an intelligent, yet light-hearted look at America's four-wheeled future. April 14 - 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. Room 287, Beacon Hall; April 15 - 6:30 - 8:00 p.m., Event Center, Beacon Hall
- Movie: Garbage Revolution, Tuesday & Wednesday, April 14 & 15. This film follows the McDonald family of Toronto, Canada, as they track their environmental impact through garbage for three months. All their waste is accounted for during that time, even the kids' lunchboxes. While the topic is serious and the footage provides interesting statistics on how each of us contributes to global warming, there are many humorous moments as well. The director encourages the audience to join an online community on the film's web site to recount its own experiences, and to share videos, stories and ideas for change, April 14 - 6:30 - 9:00 p.m., Event Center, Beacon Hall. April 15 - 12:00- 2:00 pm, Room 287, Beacon Hall.
- Music/performance: Culture of the Environment, featuring folk singer Geoff Kaufman and his "Tree of Life" program, Thursday, April 16. Bringing a vibrant focus to environmental concerns through music. Geoff sings and plays guitar, concertina, whistle, and traditional percussion instruments. 2 p.m.: Kaufman will develop a performance piece with HCC Theater Arts students. 7 p.m.: piece will be performed and Kaufman will give a solo performance. Part of the college's Third Thursday Cultural Celebration series. Performing Arts Center, Lafayette Hall.
- Poetry reading: Feeling the Eco Muse, Wednesday, April 22 Earth Day 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Students, faculty, staff will read poetry with an environmental theme, with the music club providing music. Performing Arts Center, Lafayette Hall.
- Environmental Forum, featuring Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, Thursday, April 23, 9:30 - 11:30 am. The forum will address Bridgeport's environmental needs, how state, local, and private individuals and organizations are leading the fight to meet those needs, and ways the general community can serve as its own best environmental defender. Events Center Beacon Hall.
- Community Service Project, Saturday, April 25, • 9:00 - 2:00 pm, Ansonia Nature Center. This hands-on effort will involve corduroying trails - laying down logs and earth where the land is eroded, damaged, or just plain soggy. For those not certain that physical labor like that is the best thing for them, the Nature Center will have many more jobs for people to do, so anyone- kids included- can come and join in. This counts as community service work in many public school districts as well.
- Green Fair, Thursday, April 30, 10:00 - 2:00 pm, Atrium, Lafayette Hall. Business, environmental, and grassroots
organizations will staff tables and talk to students and faculty
about their organizations and the important environmental issues
with which they are involved.
