LINCOLN/DOUGLASS RELATIONSHIP SUBJECT OF HCC PANEL DISCUSSION
BRIDGEPORT – The
relationship between Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass will be
the subject of a forum Feb. 9 at Housatonic Community College.
“It is a well-known fact that Douglass exerted
a salutary influence on Lincoln’s views concerning the course of
the Civil War, as well as on Lincoln’s views (unfulfilled at the
time of his assassination) on what was to become of freed slaves,” said
History Instructor David Koch, who is moderating and participating the
discussion. “The forum and discussion will thus deal with how
racial understanding seemed to emerge from two men with similar, and
yet widely divergent, backgrounds.”
Each of the four speakers will deal with a different aspect of the relationship.
These include:
- Koch: The role of personality and personal relationships on presidential policy and performance.
- Dr. Don Rogers, Adjunct Instructor of History: The military/political situation in 1862 that led to the meeting of the two men.
- Dr. David Canton, Adjunct Instructor of History: The affect of Douglass’ views and opinions on Lincoln’s policy-making, as well as Lincoln’s influence on Douglass’ views on the future of freed slaves in the United States.
- Reverend Dr. Anthony Bennett- Pastor, Mt. Aery Baptist Church,
Bridgeport: What can we as individuals and as a society learn
from the relationship of the two men?
