HCC to offer classes in Ansonia

Last year, more than 500 students from the Naugatuck Valley commuted to Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport each semester. This fall, the two-year college will return the favor, by setting up shop at Ansonia High School.

Part of an effort to make the college more accessible to students who live and work in the Valley, the college will offer a number of liberal arts and business courses, according to Anita Gliniecki, academic dean of the college.

"They're ideal for students who want to begin or continue their higher education," she said.

In addition, the new site will help Gliniecki defy the tight quarters that exist in the Bridgeport location.

"I'm out of classrooms. At 5 p.m., I cannot add another class [in Bridgeport] no matter how much demand there is. I have no space," Gliniecki said.

This is not the first satellite location for Housatonic. It already offers courses at Jonathan Law High School in Milford. Last year, 285 students enrolled at the Milford site.

Mike Russo, a Housatonic student who lives in Monroe, said the new site would make his commute easier.

"It will spare [the] headaches of fighting rush hour traffic or bad weather to get to classes in Bridgeport," said Russo, adding it takes him as long as 90 minutes to make his way to Bridgeport when the weather is bad. Going to Ansonia instead will cut his commute in half, he said. Courses to be offered at the Ansonia site include business, economics, composition, literature, U.S. history, algebra, psychology and sociology.

Classes will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays. A similar selection is offered Mondays and Wednesdays at Law.

The fall semester begins Aug. 26.

Open registration for the fall will be at the Bridgeport campus several days in August.

 Scheduled sessions are: 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 3; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 4; 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 22; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 23; 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 24; and 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 25.

In addition, a registration session for senior citizens and high school partnership students will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Aug. 25.
