HCC Business Programs Offer Skills That Are In DemandPublished: Bridgeport News August 19, 2004BRIDGEPORT – While global competition is forcing changes to the American economy, there are still growth areas. Housatonic Community College offers degree and certificate programs that can prepare students for jobs in these areas. One in-demand position that students can prepare for at HCC is the executive assistant. “ The job opportunities in this area are good,” said Business Department Chair Joan Gallagher of Shelton. “These positions, which you can prepare for by completing our two year executive assistant degree program, are more managerial than secretarial and the salary reflects this. One student who graduated in May landed a job paying $37,000 at the headquarters of a national hardware chain, Gallagher said. For students who want to enter the workforce in only a year, a one-year executive assistant certificate is offered. “ The program can prepare you for an entry-level job, which will provide an income while you go on for your degree,” Gallagher said. Other business office technology options offered are the information processing specialist associate degree, information processor certificate and legal assisting certificate. In addition, the college offers programs in Accounting, Finance, Banking, Management, Human Resource Management, Computer Information Systems, Health Care Management, Small Business Management, and Customer Service and Marketing. Students interested in pursuing a business degree or certificate should begin the multi-step admission/registration process as soon as possible to get the courses they want. Formal registration sessions will take place August 30 from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.; August 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Sept. 2 from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m., and Sept. 3 from 10 a.m. to noon. Classes start Sept. 7. For information call 332-5100.
