Bridge: Success story at HCC

Published: Connecticut Post Sunday August 1, 2004

This summer, HCC science students are interning at Brookhaven Research Center in Long Island. These Clinical Laboratory Technician students are assisting in intense scientific research in physical, biomedical, and environmental sciences and energy technology. They earn a stipend and are gaining valuable experience towards a degree and career at the very forefront of science.

Some of their classmates are at Clarkson University in New Hampshire, where they are participating in the Bridges Program. They are working on environmental and bio-medical projects through a grant from the National Science Foundation. And they are getting paid to do this, and receive room and board for eight weeks while they engage in scientific bio-medical research.

The Bridges Program is specifically designed for minority students who wish to continue their education in bio-medical sciences. This is the 6th year that Housatonic students have been accepted into this prestigious program.

The success rate is high. One HCC-Bridges graduate is currently in a Ph.D. program pursuing a career in pharmacology. All HCC-Bridges alumni are continuing their education toward a bachelor degree.

Students can select science programs at HCC that include the Clinical Laboratory Technology program with two options; one in Clinical Laboratory Technician and one in Biotechnology.

Nursing program students graduate from Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing. Other science programs are in Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physical Therapy Assistant, Pre-Engineering Science, Pre-Environmental Science and a large number of Computer Science offerings.

Academic Dean Anita Gliniecki said: “Housatonic can be proud of its educational excellence. We are training students to be at the cutting edge of science and computer technology. We have three distinguished Honor Societies, including Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society, Psi Beta for excellence in psychology, and Alpha Beta, for excellence in business studies. We have a highly regarded Honors Program. We graduate students who can proceed with their careers or education with confidence that they have received the best from qualified professors whose main concern is the success of their students. Our graduates are prepared for the next step.”

Those with an HCC degree who wish to continue their education are accepted into all Connecticut state universities, usually as a junior. This September, the class of ’04 will be represented at Yale, Mount Holyoke, Wellesley, NYU, Fairfield U., Sacred Heart, UConn, and other colleges and universities of note across the country.

Fall classes at HCC start September 7. Registration takes place on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 4 and 5, 30, and 31, Sept. 1, 2, 3. Students may also register any time on line at www.hcc.commnet.edu. Or, call 203-332-5100.
