$5.7m granted for expansion at Housatonic

Old Sears building will house bookstore, cafeteria, classes

A day after Gov. John G. Rowland announced it, the State Bond Commission on Friday approved about $5.7 million to design the first phase of the expansion of Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport.

The work will include renovating the adjacent former Sears building, which will be converted to a bookstore, cafeteria, dining hall and classrooms.

“Since Housatonic was relocated there seven years ago, it’s really been extraordinary growth,” said Rowland, who is chairman of the commission and sets the month agenda. “The Sears building has been vacant forever and ever.”
The commission also voted unanimously to change the recipient of a $2.5 million grant awarded last December to assist in the development of a Super Stop & Shop on Fairfield Avenue. The Bridgeport Housing Authority had been designated for the money last year; but now the grant will revert to the city.
