HOUSATONIC COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO HOST GIRLS AND TECHNOLOGY EXHIBITION

BRIDGEPORT - More than 100 seventh grade girls from across Central and Western Connecticut will assemble at Housatonic Community College Tuesday, March 18 for the second annual Girls in Technology exposition.

The girls, who will journey from as far away as Stamford, will receive a day-long exposure to the use of technology in a wide range of fields such as law enforcement, science, health and medicine and manufacturing..

The exposition is designed to introduce young women to technology and technology-based careers, and introduce them to computer skills they will need to pursue most careers.

The students will have the opportunity to hear speakers from various fields, and view exhibits drawn from technology-based fields. Exhibitors will include Alloy Engineering, Bridgeport Hospital, the Bridgeport Library, Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles, Connecticut State Police, Connecticut Voices for Children, South West Area Health Education Center and Westover School. Students will attend workshops and addresses from 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and attend an exhibition in theCafeteria from 1230 to 1:15 p.m.

Students from Bridgeport, Monroe, Stratford, Fairfield, and Stamford are expected to attend.

With a six-year old campus in the heart of Connecticut’s largest city, Housatonic is one of the country’s fastest-growing public community colleges. Since it moved to the new downtown campus in 1997, Housatonic’s enrollment has increased 70 percent. According to the most recent statistics, released by the Washington D.C- based American Association of Community Colleges, Housatonic was the Northeast’s fastest-growing community college in the 1,000-plus students category.

In response to increased enrollments and changing workplace needs both regionally and nationally, Housatonic has increased the number of programs offered from 43 to 63 since moving to its new campus.
