321 HCC STUDENTS RECEIVE DEGREES, CERTIFICATES
BRIDGEPORT - Some 321 students, members of the second largest class
in Housatonic Community College history, were awarded associate degrees
and certificates Thursday night at the college’s 35th commencement.
The graduates, clad in the dark blue Housatonic caps and gowns, gathered
at the new Arena at Harbor Yard to be honored for their achievements
by a panel of dignitaries that included HCC President Janis M. Hadley
and Connecticut Community-Technical College Trustee Jules Lang.
The Class of 2002 is the second only by the Class of 1973 (326 students).
That larger class came at a time when the total enrollments were much
lower than today, but the number of recent high school graduates pursuing
degrees or certificates full time was much higher
Student Richard W. DeLand of Shelton delivered the commencement address.
In remarks prepared for delivery, DeLand, who received his first degree
in 1969, encouraged his classmates to continue to learn and strive to
make the world a better place. “…we all know many things that
need changing,” he said. “But don’t ever stop learning.
Never feel that you are done.
“There will always be something to learn and courses to take,”
added DeLand, who pursued his latest degree to freshen his Information
Technology and business skills. “Don’t get content with how
much you know. Maintain that desire to learn throughout the rest of
your life and, more important, always try to use what you have learned
to make the world a better place.”
Two students, DeLand and Katherine G. Wilber of Fairfield, received
the Board of Trustees’ Medallion for Academic Excellence. Both
maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout their academic career at Housatonic.
DeLand received an associate degree in computer information systems
while Wilber received an associate degree in accounting.
Sixteen students were eligible to ascend the podium twice to receive
two degrees or a degree and a certificate. The former included Faith
Bailey of Bridgeport, who received associate degrees in general studies
and human services; Anna Bajguz of Naugatuck, who received associates
degrees in art and computer graphics; LaVonne Coache of Bridgeport,
who received associate degrees in criminal justice and human services;
Hope Edwards of Bridgeport, who received associate degrees in accounting
and management; Mary-Vienessa Fernandes of Bridgeport, who received
associate degrees in criminal justice and general studies; Michael Foster
of Bridgeport, who received associate degrees in accounting and finance;
Jennifer Medina of Bridgeport, who received associate degrees in accounting
and finance; and Danille Morille of Bridgeport, who received associate
degrees in finance and general studies.
Those receiving a degree and a certificate included Marjorie Angus of
Stratford, who received an associate degree and certificate in early
childhood education; Amy Cardinale of Stratford, who received an associate
degree in general studies and a behavioral health care specialist certificate;
Mildred Ceballo of Bridgeport, who received an associate degree and
certificate in early childhood education; Florencia Cornieles of Stratford,
who received an associate degree and certificate in early childhood
education; Pat McMahon of Fairfield, who received an associate degree
in data processing and a certificate in microcomputer networks; Maureen
Robinson of Bridgeport, who received an associate degree and certificate
in early childhood education; Stacy Skeene of Bridgeport, who received
an associate degree in computer science and a microcomputer repair technician
certificate, and Joseph Valentino of Bridgeport, who received an associate
degree in early childhood education, special education, and certificate
in early childhood education.
The 35th commencement was marked by several highlights, including two
“firsts.” These included:
Four students, William Demjan, Jr., James Mesidor, and Jessica Rosales-Irias
of Bridgeport, and DeLand, receiving degrees as the first graduates
of the college’s Computer Information Systems program.
One student, Winnes Jordan of Bridgeport, receiving a certificate as
the first graduate of the college’s Human Services: Disabilities
Specialist certificate program.
English professor Janet Zamparo of West Haven, a jazz singer of increasing
popularity on the area club/special event circuit, singing the national
anthem.
Mickey Herbert, president, CEO, and majority owner of the Bridgeport
Bluefish baseball club, received the Board of Trustees’ Merit Award.
Herbert was selected for the award, said Atty. Jules Lang of the Board
of Trustees of Connecticut Community-Technical Colleges, “in recognition
of his service and commitment to the cause of community college education
and to the advancement of Housatonic Community College.”
With a five-year-old campus in the heart of Connecticut's largest city,
Housatonic is one of the country's fastest growing public community
colleges. Since it moved to the new campus in January, 1997, HCC's enrollment
has increased 61 percent. According to the most recent statistics released
by the Washington D.C.-based American Association of Community Colleges,
HCC was ranked among the 34 fastest growing public community colleges
and was third in the Northeast.
In response to increased enrollments and changing workplace needs both
regionally and nationally, HCC has increased the number of programs
offered from 43 to 60 since moving to the new campus.

degree/certificate, major, honors if appropriate. The honors designations
are: Honors (EH): 3.4 - 3.69 Cumulative Grade Point Average; High Honors
(EHI): 3.7 - 3.89 Cumulative GPA; Highest Honors (EVHH): 3.9- 4.0 Cumulative
GPA. To qualify for academic honors designations, students must have
earned a minimum of 36 credits at HCC, excluding credits earned through
examinations or departmental evaluation for life experience. Graduation
honors do not apply to certificate programs
