Dr. Richards earned a Ph.D. in a joint Sociology-Psychology program at the University of Michigan. She was an Assistant Professor in the School of Organization and Management at Yale University. She then spent many years as a community organizer in New Haven, working in low-income neighborhoods. She also served on the New Haven Board of Aldermen. She speaks Spanish and does extensive volunteer work among and on behalf of Connecticut’s Latino immigrants. She has been at Housatonic since 1992 and currently teaches Principles of Sociology (in English and Spanish), Racial and Ethnic Diversity, and a course called School and Community in which students do volunteer work in the community. She was recently elected as the representative of the non-technical faculty at all 12 community colleges to the Standing Advisory Committee of the Board of Governors for Higher Education in Connecticut. Through that position she has been able to learn about and be involved in statewide policy issues regarding higher education.
