Advising

Academic Advising is an important component for students to incorporate in their success plan. Each semester students meet with an advisor one-on-one. New students receive their placement test results, any transfer credits awarded, the selection of or declaration of their chosen major, specific degree requirements for their major, instructions on how to use the college catalog and schedule, completion of the registration form, assignment of a faculty advisor, how to contact their advisor and how to prepare for the registration process. Continuing students are encouraged to see their faculty advisors early in the registration process. For the winter and spring semesters, early advisement/registration begins in November. For the summer and fall semesters, early advisement and registration begins in April. Students will need to contact their faculty advisor, set an appointment and meet with them prior to registration. Faculty advisors are not available during the summer months or during the holiday intersession. Continuing students who have not seen their faculty advisor during these periods will need to seek advising in one of three locations in Lafayette Hall, A111, A108, and B120.

The Academic Advising Center is located in LH-A111. Two full time academic advisors are available to all students on a walk-in basis. Primarily new, transfer, readmit and non-degree seeking students are the focus. However, all students are welcome to the Center for advising questions, changes to major or faculty advisor, and completion of necessary paperwork such as the Declaration of Major form or a degree evaluation.

In addition, student advising is conducted in the Counseling Center (LH- A108) and the Academic Support Center (LH- B120) when faculty advisors are not available. Continuing students are encouraged to see their faculty advisor prior to the end of each fall and spring semester. Students seeking advising in the summer months can go to LH- A111, LH- A108, or LH- B120 for advising since most full time faculty are not available.

Students seeking information on transferability of coursework and articulation agreements with the four state universities and private colleges in the state of Connecticut can utilize the services of the Transfer Counselor in the Counseling Center (LH- A108).

Successful students are those who plan. Planning requires that students are clear on the requirements of their specific degree, what their short and long term goals are, and the knowledge of the student resources available on campus. Students are encouraged to seek advising prior to registration. The Academic Advising Center, the Counseling Center, and the Academic Support Center are excellent resources for all students to utilize and enhance their academic success.
